Our chapter was truly blessed to have Mary Brown, Healthcare Leading Culture Transformation Specialist at Spectrum Health join us and present on this very important topic. The information shared helps us understand the biases that black professional face everyday in healthcare and other professional industries. These biases can be like quicksand when it comes to advancing ones career because they are silent but deadly barriers that have been in place and systemically institutionalized in the companies where we work. That is why when you look around, you will see people of color, most often in the stereotypical job positions, at the lower end of the pecking order. Understanding these biases, educating and bringing awareness to them and just the science of how the brain works as it relates to unconscious biases is so important and we are so grateful that Mary was able to join us and share the facts on this topic.
